β Terra is back: Despite an impressive crash and the disappearance of nearly $60 billion, Terra will relaunch a blockchain and crypto-currency project. π₯ Plant-based meat is making its way. After the rise of the duo Impossible Food and Beyond Meat, new players are entering the market. This week, the French start-up La Vie formalised an agreement with Burger King to supply plant-based bacon.
π Layoffs are increasing in the Tech industry: The macro-economic context has disturbed the financial markets and the focus is now on profitability while valuations are falling. Thus, Fintech companies such as Klarna, the Swedish "buy now pay later", are cutting their workforce. The quick commerce companies - Getir, Gorillas and Zapp - are also affected by this crisis.
πΊ AirBnb is leaving China. Weakened by the zero Covid policy, competition from local applications such as Tujia and successive confinements, Airbnb has not succeeded in establishing itself on the Chinese market. π Founder of the week: Stanislas Niox-ChΓ’teau (Doctolib)
This week we present you Stanislas Niox-ChΓ’teau, Founder & CEO of Doctolib
Doctolib is now known to all, especially since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. This marketplace, connecting healthcare professionals and patients, was launched in 2013 by Stanislas Niox-ChΓ’teau and has become one of the few French unicorns in the healthcare landscape.
Stanislas Niox-ChΓ’teau was born in Paris (France) in 1987, in a family of teachers. Since his childhood, Stanislas has been playing tennis. He participated in many high level competitions: he won the International Youth Open at the age of 12, was selected by the French Tennis Team and won the Paris Championships six times.
During this period of his life, he already showed a lot of hard work and perseverance, he said "In sports as in business, I was not necessarily the best, but I was very hardworking".
But in 2004, at only 17 years old, itβs over. Stanislas seriously injured his back and had to put an end to his tennis career. He then had to concentrate on his studies, and did so with the same success: He obtained a scientific baccalaureate with honors and entered a preparatory class for business schools. In 2006, he was admitted to HEC (top business school in France).
After graduating, Stanislas was recruited in 2010 by Otium Capital, an investment fund that allowed him to initially launch TheFork (formerly LaFourchette), an online restaurant reservation platform that has since been acquired by TripAdvisor for an estimated $150 million.
He then created Doctolib in 2013. In its first year, the platform already had one million users. In just four years, the company has attracted more than 45,000 healthcare professionals, 1,000 healthcare institutions and 35 million users in France and Germany. According to Stanislas Niox-ChΓ’teau, "the main thing is not to have a revolutionary idea, but to improve the daily lives of millions of people with simple tools, providing concrete solutions to everyday problems." In 2019, Doctolib raised a major β¬150 million in funding from BPI France and Eurazeo, becoming a unicorn (an unlisted startup with a valuation of over $1 billion).
The coronavirus crisis has contributed to the success of the platform and in particular its teleconsultation service launched in early 2019. In 2 years, 1,400,000 French people have performed a video consultation on Doctolib.
In March 2022, Doctolib completed one of the largest fundraising in the history of French Tech thanks to a β¬500 million round of financing (with BPI France and Eurazeo in the first place) and became the biggest unicorn in France, now valued at $5.8 billion. With these funds, Doctolib now wants to accelerate their international development and recruit 3,500 new employees.
